⚔️ Trade Tensions Mounting!
Your Weekly Dose of Health Insights – Because Your Health Isn’t Just a Headline
Good morning, Other Siders!
A couple of days ago, I found myself deep in conversation with a friend who works on the frontlines of healthcare. She jokingly said that healthcare felt like "trying to assemble IKEA furniture, except someone hid the manual, and there's always an extra screw left at the end." We laughed, but then I realized she wasn't entirely joking. Healthcare today really can feel like tackling a confusing flat-pack cabinet—complex, challenging, but incredibly satisfying when it finally clicks together.
At The Other Side, that's exactly what we aim to do—help you navigate the complexity and piece it all together, seamlessly and with a smile. If you're new here, welcome aboard! Consider us your friendly consultants and partners in digital health, operational transformation, and meaningful change leadership.

News that Impacts You!
Tariff Troubles Ahead? 🏥
The ongoing trade war with the U.S. is threatening Ontario's healthcare system! Hospital associations are sounding alarms that tariffs could disrupt access to vital medical equipment and medications. Imagine needing an MRI scan but the machine can't be serviced because of import restrictions.
Are we prepared for potential shortages of essential healthcare supplies?
Rare Diseases Relief! 🧬
Yukon just scored a bilateral agreement for rare disease drugs! The feds are dishing out cash to help Yukoners afford those obscenely expensive treatments that can cost up to $4 million per year. Imagine living in remote Dawson City with a rare condition - now you might actually get treatment without selling your igloo!
Do you think other territories will follow suit, or will this create healthcare inequality across the country?
Trust Drives Digital Health! 🔑
Australian researchers discovered what we all suspected - if people don't trust digital health, they won't use it! Factors like digital literacy, previous tech experiences, and privacy concerns all play major roles. It's like trying to convince your grandma that her doctor can diagnose her rash over Zoom without her getting hacked!
How much do you trust your healthcare provider's latest digital offerings?
Vaccine Funding Crisis! 💉
The WHO just sounded the alarm that funding cuts to global health programs could unravel 20 years of vaccination progress. The U.S. funding freeze has measles labs on the brink of shutdown while cases skyrocket globally. Think your kid's school is safe? With international travel back in full swing, those unvaccinated communities might be closer than you think.
How worried should Canadians be about these global health funding cuts?

🕵️♀️Case in Point
Transforming Primary Care Through Remote Patient Monitoring
Background: In 2017, Frederick Health, a leading healthcare provider in Frederick County, Maryland, launched a Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) program in collaboration with Health Recovery Solutions (HRS). The initiative aimed to enhance care for patients with chronic conditions by enabling continuous health monitoring and reducing hospital readmissions.
The Problem: Patients with chronic illnesses often require frequent monitoring to manage their conditions effectively. Traditional in-person visits can be burdensome for both patients and healthcare providers, leading to inefficiencies and increased healthcare costs. Frederick Health sought a solution to provide consistent care without necessitating frequent hospital visits.
The Solution: Frederick Health implemented an RPM program that equipped patients with devices to monitor vital signs such as weight, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels. A dedicated team of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and social workers monitored these metrics daily, conducted regular check-in calls, and provided home visits for education and medication management. The program expanded over time, accepting referrals from various sources, including home health agencies, physician offices, and community organizations.
The Outcome: Over a 12-month period, the RPM program yielded significant results:
These outcomes highlight the program's effectiveness in reducing hospital readmissions, enhancing patient satisfaction, and achieving substantial cost savings.
